MXF Video File Structure

Material eXchange Format (MXF), which is a “container” or “wrapper” format, it is for professional digital video and audio media defined by a set of SMPTE standards. MXF has header, body and footer sections.

  • The header allows a decoder to easily identify a file as MXF,
  • The footer unambiguously marks the end of the data.
  • The file body, the biggest part in the middle, we also call it essence.

We can use media tool to get the information of the MXF format:

Format                                    MPEG Video
Commercial name                           XDCAM HD422
Format version                            Version 2
Format settings                           Custom Matrix / BVOP

Corrupted MXF video or a RSV file

If something wrong happens when you are recording the MXF file, for example, device cash, accidentally interrupted or power failure, you will find an RSV file instead of a MXF file on the Memory card.

You may get a broken MXF or RSV file in most cases:

  • MXF file is not playable on the memory card or on computer.
  • MXF file cannot be copied from the memory card.
  • MXF file became very small on the memory card.
  • MXF file was recovered by data recovery software after CF card is broken
  • MXF file was recovered by data recovery software after memory card was formatted accidentally or MXF file was deleted accidentally.

Repair MXF or RSV video file Recovery

In fact, the damaged MXF or RSV file doesn’t have a correct (full) structure, it has bad footer in some cases or it only has the body section (raw data).

What if to copy the header and footer from a working video? Is it working?

The answer is NO. Because every file is different, different data unite, different stream size, different duration, and the header and footer are different.

To get a corrupted MXF file repaired, we need to analyze the body (raw data), create the correct header and footer to rebuild the structure for the MXF file. All the process are Manual. We have years of experience in the project of MXF recovery, and find a solution to recover the corrupted MXF and deleted MXF video file. We can manually rebuild the header and footer for the body section. If you have a damaged/broken/corrupted or unfinalized/unplayable MXF file, all you have to do is to upload it to any cloud storage space, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Mega, FileMail or others you know, then send us the link to download.

Recover MXF Video file from Memory Card (SD/CF/P2/SXS/XQD)

If you have a broken MXF file recovered from memory card after deleted or formatted, or the card was damaged, that’s because the data recovery software you used doesn’t work for the MXF file due to its complicated file structure. To get your MXF file back, we need to manually recover it from the memory card in more professional way. We don’t actually need your card, we only need the image file of it. No worry, it is simple to create it. We will guide you step by step.

Note: Please stop using the Memory card to avoid the raw data overwritten.
