It was 11 p.m. on a Saturday. A wedding videographer Peter in Madrid messaged us: rushing to prep cards for the after-party, she had formatted the wrong CFA card — the one holding the entire ceremony, 128 GB of footage from a SONY camera, not yet backed up anywhere.
The problem
In-camera format, full card, zero backup, and a client expecting a highlight film in three weeks. On the good side: the card had been removed immediately after the mistake, and nothing new had been written to it. That combination — quick action, no overwrite — is what recovery dreams are made of.
What we did

- Scanned the image file for the camera’s file system remnants plus raw signature carving as a safety net.
- Restored the complete original folder structure and file names, exactly as the camera had written them.

Why formatting usually doesn’t destroy anything
A standard (quick) format does two things: it writes a fresh, empty file table and — on cameras — may flip a flag telling the card’s controller blocks are reusable. Neither touches your actual video data. The camera “knows” the card is empty, but the bits of every recording are still sitting in the flash, patiently waiting to be overwritten.
Danger enters only when new recordings start landing on the card. Each new file claims the newly “free” space and gradually paints over the old data — which is exactly why the first hour after a format mistake matters so much.
