A father of two from Toronto wrote to us the day after returning from a two-week trip to Portugal. On the flight home, while freeing up space on the camera, he had selected what he thought was one clip — and confirmed “Delete All” on the card instead.
The problem
One tap. 80 videos and about 400 photos gone — beach days, a birthday celebration on the last night, the kids meeting their grandparents. The Canon R10 camera offered no undo (cameras never do). He had, smartly, done exactly the right thing afterward: turned the camera off and removed the card.

Why “deleted” usually doesn’t mean destroyed
When a camera deletes files, it doesn’t erase the actual data — that would take minutes per card. It simply marks the space as “free for reuse” in the card’s file table and forgets the entries. The bits of your videos are still physically on the flash until new recordings overwrite them, sector by sector.
This is why the single most important rule in all of data recovery is: stop using the card the moment you realize something is gone. Every new recording is a rolling eraser.
